How one false accusation and a corrupt system killed Kalief Browder

It’s May 15th, 2010... 10 days before Kalief Browder’s 17th birthday and his life is about to take a drastic turn.
Police officers were responding to a 9-1-1 call about the theft of a backpack by “2 black guys”.
Browder and a friend were apprehended on their way home from a party.
The police searched Browder, but they did not find the backpack..yet Browder and his friend were identified as the thieves.
Browder was charged with robbery, grand larceny, and assault. Bail was sweet at 3,000.
Browder was imprisoned on Riker’s Island notoriously known for being one of America’s problematic prisons. Browder was a victim of prison violence on numerous occasions being beaten and terrorized by the corrections officers and inmates.
Altogether, Browder spent nearly two years in solitary confinement.
74 days went by before Browder was brought in front of a judge.
285 days went by before Browder appeared in court.
The prosecution requested a deferment of proceedings 5 times for not being ready from June 2011 to December 2012.
After 961 days in prison, Browder had appeared before 8 judges
Kalief attempted suicide 2 times.
On May 29, 2013, Browder was freed.
November 2013, Browder filed a lawsuit against the New York Police department, the BX district attorney’s and the Department of Corrections.
Soon after his release Browder passed a GED exam and enrolled at the Bronx Community College.
Browder completed 11 credits and finished his semester with a grade point average of 3.562
Due to depression, Browder did not attend college in the fall semester.
He said “Before I went to jail, I don’t know about a lot of stuff, and now that I’m aware, I’m paranoid. I feel like I was robbed of my happiness”
After his arrest Kalief was admitted to the psych ward at St Barnabas Hospital 3 times.
On June 6, 2015 at 12:15pm, Browder died by suicide by hanging himself from an air conditioning u it outside his bedroom window at his mother’s home.
