Remembering 'Flying Sikh' Milkha Singh (10 parts)
From the archives of Milkha's little-known autobiography: Flying Sikh, Milkha Singh, which was published first in Punjabi in 1970s and later translated into Hindi and in English, we are bringing you the life of legendary athlete from witnessing tragedy, deprivation, survival against all odds and victory in the face of loss.
It also includes the number of interaction I had with the legend since 2005, when I moved to Chandigarh for a job in print media, as a sports journalist.
The stories are from the pre-partition to post-partition era, from partition riots to joining Indian army to becoming a Flying Sikh.
It is about a legend, who had seen blood bath during partition, a birth of two nations, murder of his parents and four siblings, landing up in Delhi as an orphan and refugee, did odd jobs to survive, eventually becoming the greatest sportsperson the country had ever produced in the post-partition era.
The legendary athlete lost the battle to COVID on June 18. It was within a span of five days, when his wife Nirmal Kaur breathed her last, Milkha passed away. He was 91.
