FOREWORD
-OF DANGERS THAT LURK ROUND THE CORNER.
Afghanistan has been one of those tragic countries that has faced endless violence for the last three decades and a half. Even before the superpowers fought their Cold War here, Pakistan a new-born state, had been trying from the very beginning of its own creation to establish control in Afghanistan as a hedge against India. Islam has not provided Pakistan the glue it needed and its leaders chose not to learn from the creation of Bangladesh. On the contrary, pursuit of jihadi terrorism for its regional and specific anti-India policies became Pakistan’s slogan, having picked up the wrong lessons of Islamic jihad against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan.
The famous Zbigniew Brzezinski interview with Nouvelle Observateur was remarkable both for what was said and for its naiveté and nonchalance. He had said, “What is more important for world history? The Taliban or the fall of the Soviet Empire? Some Islamic hotheads or the liberation of Central Europe and the end of Cold war?” The then National Security Adviser to US President Jimmy Carter added “It’s said that the West has a global policy regarding Islam. That’s hogwash: there is no global Islam.... It is the first world religion with 1.5 billion adherents. But what is common between moderate Morocco and militaristic Pakistan?”
Events in the last few decades, and especially in the last few years in India’s neighbourhood, show just how wrong America has been in its assessment of the situation and prediction for the future.Afghans will vote for a new preside t in April (2014)and at the end of the year the Americans threaten to pull out of the countr y. They fought their longest war overseas to bring democracy to Afghanistan and to rid the world of the Taliban and al Qaeda. They might have succeeded partially in the first objective but democracy is not a ‘flick of the button’ affair. It failed in the other two objectives and is now willing to lead negotiations with the very group, the Taliban, it set out to decimate.
