“The Da Lakhvi Code” continues …….
The above-mentioned message came from chachoji@hotmail. com and was sent to rashid32XXXX@hotmail.com. Our guess, as already mentioned, was that ‘Chachoji’ was none other than Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi.
The email clearly implied that a plan for a terrorist attack, masterminded by Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, was afoot. Our apprehension was further strengthened by an email we intercepted the following day (14 February), again from chachoji@hotmail.com to rashid32XXXX@hotmail.com. It read:
Dear Rashid,
AOA. Match ka date fix ho gaya hai. World cup ka final 25 ko tay hua hai. Time wahi hai match ka. Best of luck. Zaid.
[Dear Rashid, Allah is great. The date for the match is fixed. The World Cup final is on 25 February. Time of the match is the same. Best of luck. Zaid.]
The originating IP address was of Islamabad, Pakistan. Besides informing my immediate superior, I took his permission to inform the central intelligence agency we usually worked with on such operations. When notified, some in the agency were incredulous and thought we had cooked it all up. Rather than take follow-up action on the input, every effort was made to prove it was a hoax—a clear example of inter-agency rivalry. How could the lowly local police come up with such pinpointed intelligence, and that too involving an imminent terror attack by a Pak-based terror group, when it was the primary responsibility of the central intelligence agency? That, I guess, was the thinking of our colleagues in the intelligence outfit. Fortunately, some other key officers in the agency, who had faith in us, were impressed with the quality of cyber work done based on what appeared to be an innocuous bit of information collected in Kashmir. After a few initial hiccups, everyone in the agency felt adequately alarmed and began to work feverishly on the case.
