Sovereignty Under Siege continues....
Having made all these preparations, on the morning of 13 December 2001, Afzal and Shaukat met Mohammad and his four associates at their new safe house in Gandhi Vihar in north-west Delhi. Mohammad handed over a laptop and Rs 10 lakh to Afzal and asked him to give the laptop to Tariq at Lal Chowk in Srinagar on 16 December. Further, Mohammad asked Afzal to accompany Tariq when he went to meet Ghazi Baba and in turn hand over the laptop to the JeM commander.
Mohammad also instructed Afzal to turn on the TV on 13 December—the day of the attack—at 11.30 a.m. and let Mohammad know the names of the VIP MPs who were present in the Parliament House. However, when Mohammad called Afzal at 11.25 a.m., Afzal informed him that he was nowhere near a TV set. Afzal called Shaukat to ask him to switch on his TV and let him know who was present inside the Parliament House. By the time Shaukat could do so, Mohammad and his four associates were already inside the parliament complex and were in the midst of their operation.
On 10 December—three days before the incident— Mohammad, during a conversation with Afzal, had shared details of his involvement in the hijacking of Indian Airlines flight 814 (IC 814) in December 1999, when the said flight was forcibly taken to Kandahar in Afghanistan. During the hijacking, Mohammad was addressed by the fake name ‘Burger’. It was as a consequence of this hijacking that the Government of India had handed over the JeM supremo Maulana Masood Azhar along with Omar Sheikh and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar to the hijackers in exchange for the passengers of IC 814 held hostage.
