πWeight belts have become more and more popular to use. With this increase in usage you need to understand when and why youβre using it.
β
πUsing a weight belt during lifts helps increase abdominal pressure (IAP) which will create more trunk stiffness giving added stability in the spine.
β
πIn the area where your lumbar spine is, there are no other surrounding bones to help support the lower back. We have our muscle to help, but a good way to build that stability in the lower back is to use the bracing technique. This can help in reducing the risk of injuring your lower back.
β
πWith the weight belt, you further increase the stiffness creating more stability.
β
πThe weight belt is best used near maximal lifts. Although it is not proven that thereβs any downside to using it in your lighter lifts, it best not to rely on a weight belt. Try to use your natural weight belt (transverse abdominas) to stabilize your core instead.
β
πThe weight belt is great to reduce injury, however it should not be used as standalone in injury prevention. The best way to optimize lower back health is by lifting with good technique especially when lifting heavy. Before you even begin to consider using a weight belt make sure you have good technique without it.
