I like how it starts and ends under a tree.
1917 is a 2019 British war film, it was written by Sam Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Cairins. It was directed by Sam Mendes . Roger Deakins won the Oscar for best cinematography for this movie. The movie is about World War 1 when Lance Cpl. Schofield and Lance Cpl. Blake receive orders to stop an attack of their army at a spot because it will lead to heavy casualties. The conflict in the movie is about war and psychological affects it has on people. It's also about brotherhood and family.
George McKay plays the role of Lance Cpl. Schofield. Dean-Charles Chapman plays the role of Lance Cpl. Blake. Their mission is to deliver a message to Colonel Mackenzie, where the attack will be called off as it will affect in heavy causality of the 1600 men of the regiment, including Blake's brother Lieutenant Joseph Blake. They cross the English trenches and the no man's land. Schofield is injured in the withdrawn German Trenches as a rat triggers a trip wire set by the Germans. They rest at an abandoned farmhouse, a German fighterplane is shot down in a dogfight. They both save the burned pilot but he stabs Blake, Schofield shoots him dead. Blake dies in Schofield's arms. Schofield promises to complete the mission and write to Blake's mother. Upon crossing a bridge he faces a sniper, they both shoot at each other. Schofield is saved by his helmet but is unconscious. He gains consciousness and finds a town in flames. He finds a French woman there with her child. They are starving and this scene shows the ugly nature of war, very far from the "heroics". She tends to Schofield's wounds and he gives her canned food. He leaves and upon encountering German soldiers, he jumps into a river and is swept into a watefall. He meets a British Convoy on land and then reaches the trenches and sprints toward the Colonel to give him the message.
The attack is called off and he also meets Blake's brother and tell him the whole journey. Finally, he sits by a tree and looks at a photograph of his family.
