Sovereignty Under Siege continues......
It was not surprising, therefore, to hear similar stories about the attack on the Parliament House. In a whisper campaign, the then ruling party—BJP—was accused of staging the terror attack to distract public attention from the Bangaru Laxman fiasco, where the BJP party chief was caught on camera accepting money to assist phony arms dealers bag government contracts (see ‘Story of Their Assassins’). Sundry cynics, most of them ‘well educated’, subscribe to this view till date. But, more shockingly, many naysayers felt that the security forces deployed at the parliament complex need not have given their lives to fight the terrorists. The cynics, some from within the government, would have been happier if the terrorists had been given a safe passage into the Parliament House so that they could do away with as many parliamentarians as possible. Little do they realize the repercussions that would have followed, and what the aftermath of such an event would have been. Our country would have certainly gone to war with Pakistan and faced other catastrophic eventualities.
Be that as it may, the terror attack on the Parliament House was easily one of the dastardliest acts of Pakistan-based terrorists. Providence had willed their plan to fail. The little wall near gate eleven proved to be the terrorists’ nemesis. The response of the security forces was commendable, leading to the gunning down of the attackers. The closing of the gates of the parliament by the Watch and Ward staff was another masterly stroke. That five Delhi Police personnel, a CRPF constable, two Watch and Ward staffers and a gardener lost their precious lives was the price we had to pay to protect the citadel of our democracy and our elected parliamentarians. We, as Indians, should never forget their sacrifice.
