Recently, a 23-year-old doctor, Vandana Das, was stabbed to death at a hospital in Kottarakkara, Kollam district, Kerala, allegedly by a man brought there by police after being involved in a fight with his family members.
The man, identified as Sandeep, was a school teacher under suspension.
While a wound on Sandeep's leg was being dressed Dr Das, suddenly attacked everyone present using a scissor and a scalpel.
The young doctor bore the brunt of the attack and succumbed to her injuries a few hours later. The police personnel accompanying Sandeep were also injured.
This appalling incident has raised questions on the security of the healthcare workers who ceaselessly work to help their patients but surprisingly don’t get enough protection.
Such incidents can create fear in the minds of healthcare workers as there are no such rules to assure their safety.
Both the Indian Medical Association and Kerala Government Medical Officers' Association protested against the incident.
The government is doing little to ensure healthcare workers' safety at their workplaces, anyone with scissors or a scalpel in their hand can attack the doctor or other workers who are actually present there to serve the patients.
Don’t you think there should be some strict rules for the safety of doctors so that their life is not at stake?
