I consider the operation leading up to the arrest of Aftab Ansari and Raju Anadkat as one of the most satisfying moments of my career. Never had I imagined that the seizure of arms, ammunition and explosives in a remote area of Gujarat, made by us in the CBI in tandem with the BSF, would lead us to the perpetrators of a serious terror attack in Kolkata, over a thousand miles away. Our hunt for the mastermind led us to the Gulf from where we got him in a rather dramatic fashion. That one of the captives turned out to be linked with the funding of the 9/11 terror attack of 2001 added a global dimension to the operation.
We had traced the backward and forward linkages meticulously and, most importantly, in close co-ordination with police officers of several states, our Diplomatic Corps and the Prime Minister of the country himself! By sheer providence, I was the fulcrum of these efforts by virtue of my being posted in the CBI. It further reinforces my undying belief I have always had that in synergy, mutual trust and co-operation lie the key to success in law-enforcement. The contours of the operation also underscore the necessity for a federal agency, which can act as the pivot around which all action can revolve. Is there such an agency in our country today? is the moot question.
