Police officers behind such probes remain unknown and unsung.
Even in a case like the Parliament House terror attack, the officers who solved the case in less than seventy-two hours hardly received any recognition.
Had a similar case been solved in another country, say the US, I am sure the police team concerned would have received an invite to the White House for tea with the American president, besides being felicitated in other ways. Cover stories on them would have appeared in prestigious magazines like Time and Newsweek. But no such thing ever happens in our country. We are adept at police-bashing, but always fail to acknowledge their good work.
Quite unconsciously, by telling these stories, I strive to bring their good work to the fore, for whatever it is worth.
Whether we like it or not, each one of us leaves behind a legacy, if not for the big wide world, at least for our near and dear ones. It can be a house, some money or, if nothing else, some stories or memories. With Dial D for Don and Khaki Files, the twenty police stories that I have narrated, I sincerely hope, would become a part of my modest legacy.
