Strategic playbook continues....
The success of the ‘jihadi’ strategy, even if partial, in achieving strategic and tactical objectives in Kashmir and Afghanistan, has legitimised the use of terrorist groups. According to Vali Nasr, “Pakistan was able at the time to perpetuate its regional interests by adroitly using extremism with minimal investment in resources.
That Pakistan’s strategic outlook on the Afghanistan and Kashmir issues has not changed suggests that the military is likely to continue to use extremism to achieve it strategic objectives.” A continuation of the jihadi policy will only encourage radical elements within the Army and thereby weaken the State’s resolve to counter such threats to its homeland, as well as the world.
Given the motivations and predicaments the army has inherited, events in Afghanistan could prove to be the biggest challenge it has faced since 1947.
