Goan rhapsody continues…..
Soon, there was nobody in sight at the ferry point. We had succeeded in pre-empting another big rave party. It was possibly the last attempt by the organizers to host a rave party. Or was it? Goa never fails to surprise anyone, and I was no exception.
Shortly after the Canacona experience, one afternoon an MLA from north Goa walked into my office. We chatted cordially until he dropped a bombshell on me.
He lamented, ‘DG sahib, with your clampdown on rave parties, you have ruined the reputation of Goa as a holiday destination. Which tourist will come here if you make it a police state?’
Before I could react he asked me, ‘What if I were to hold a rave party in the privacy of my farmhouse? Would you raid it as well?’
It took me some time to respond. All I said was, ‘Try it.’
He stormed out of my office in a huff, leaving his cup of tea unfinished.
I could sense that the MLA wished to prove a point and was determined to tie up with rave party organizers— clearly people with deep pockets—and have a get-together at his farm. He would undoubtedly earn a substantial sum of money in the bargain. He was sure the police would think twice before raiding an MLA’s property.
We lost no time in finding out where his farm was. Near Ashvem, on the Morjim–Tiracol road, a dirt track veered off the road and led to the politician’s farm, which was a good 3 kilometres away from the main road. Our informers were alerted and commanded to immediately inform us if they learnt of any rave party being held in that area. Sure enough, within a week of the MLA’s visit to my office, we got news that a drug party would soon be held at his farm. We had details of the date and time. The organizers were sure that with the MLA’s involvement, and the fact that the party was to take place on his private farm, the police would not dare to come anywhere near them.
To be continued….
