It might have been a long wait for Harold Terens – an American World War II veteran who turned 100 on Saturday – but he finally got married to his 96-year-old fiancée in Normandy. Just days before this event, however, on the 80th anniversary of D-Day landings in north-western France he received an honourable mention. Terens and his beloved Jeanne Swerlin exchanged their vows amidst the rhythms of “Ave Maria”, “I’ll always love you” and sounds from bagpipes during a ceremony that took place at Carentan-les-Marais before dozens of onlookers.
