A Case of Chronic Constipation;
A 10-year-old girl came in with severe constipation; she would strain so much that she would get blood in the stool. she’d been taken to paediatricians and gastro specialists and been prescribed laxatives and a high- fibre diet. but nothing worked and she began to get a protruding belly. by the time she came to us, she was obese. as a child, she had been breastfed, but she was so underweight that at six months, she had been given a special syrup to help her gain weight, after which she gained weight steadily (she then gained 20 kg).
Presenting Symptoms
• Chronic constipation
• low immunity
• history of hair fall and severe itching on the body
Blood tests revealed low vitamin d3, critically low magnesium (when bloodwork shows low levels, it means the tissues are starved of the mineral) and her anti-gliadin antibody test (for wheat intolerance) was positive. We eliminated the gluten and gave her a normal diet with modified grains and vegetables, and supplemented with magnesium. by the next follow-up (in two weeks), her stools were already becoming soft and regular. and by the second visit (in a month), her other issues of itching and hair fall were also resolving and the constipation was a thing of the past. her mother was eternally grateful for this resolution to her child’s daily suffering.
A Case of Diabetes Control;
A fifty-six-year-old gentleman, Mr h., had diabetes since he was thirty-five. he was on forty units of insulin daily. Not obese, he did have a fatty liver and was carrying extra belly fat (girth was 35.5 inches).
Presenting Symptoms
• diabetes for twenty years
• history of sinusitis, low immunity
• dry skin and mild constipation
Bloodwork showed the glycosylated hb (hba1C) was 7.2, despite the insulin shots he had been taking for several years. his cholesterol levels were abnormal and his haemoglobin was low. We put him on a modified grain diet and cut out the dairy as well.
