Sneaking out of church a little earlier than usual proved a 'blessing' this Sunday. Porimohon da appeared with a cane basket, covered with a gamcha full of glittering contents. Upon closer inspection we found it was the freshest and silver-est Puthi maach (One spot barb fish) we had seen in a while.
Porimohon da offered an irresistible price to go with it, "tirish taka ek pawa, ekhon dhorsi." (Thirty rupees for one pao, freshly caught).
As we gathered around, it became a collective and fun thing for us to do. We discovered the fish. My aunt helped pick them out. Cousin helped clean it. Then mother and I fried it. We ended up helping each other out for lunch too! A fun Sunday festival!
Here's our simple but savoury recipe. Just add a pinch of salt, turmeric and red chilli powder to the fish and fry it in some mustard oil! Donezo. Crispy puthi fish. Best with steamed rice and dal (lentil soup).
We hope you have a lovely Sunday too!
