Lovely read! Thanks for sharing :)
Okay so I just visited this really cool bookstore and I think everyone should visit it once!!👀👀
A warm, bright red logo is the first sign that greets you as you walk up the stairs to enter the famous Oxford Bookstore in the heart of Connaught Place.
I think knowing the deep rooted history of the bookstore adds a lot to the experience. I honestly went there for the aesthetics lol💅
The original Oxford bookstore started in Kolkata back in 1919 by the British. It was known for its leather backed books that only the wealthy could afford. Soon after independence, it was acquired by the Apeejay Surrendra group who spread the brand across the country. The fortune and fate of Oxford are intertwined. In a lot of ways, the bookstore has witnessed a rebirth of the country after its emergence from colonial rule🌺
The first book that caught my eye when I entered was a copy of ‘Kamasutra’😳😳(which, I believe, was very intentional. What’s more eye-catching than a book about the ancient art of making love to gen-z and millennials?).
There was also a wall of quirky and neon words (once again) to appeal to the young readers and also a way to create an instagrammable environment. It said 'slay' and 'queen'. No comments on that tbh💀💀💀
.
Oxford here has taken quite a modern take on their bookstores here; there’s a cafe at the back snuck in a little corner which engulfs the establishment in an extravagant coffee scent that adds so much more to the experience. The addition of a ball made me feel like a little child again. I came across titles I used to read when I was 9 years old like BFG by Roald Dahl and the Wimpy Kid series.
Overall, I’ve realized that the Oxford bookstore doesn’t sell books- it sells nostalgia. You come across books that you used to read back when you were a different person or books that make you think of someone else. It has an unmatchable vibe with an established name that cannot be countered. I cannot wait to go back and explore more!
