A Somali dessert
Xalwo (halwo) or halva is a popular dessert, served on special occasions such as Eid celebrations or weddings. Xalwadii promise qarsatey! (“I hid with your xalwo candy!”) is a phrase that follows a person who has run away or has a small, private wedding. Xalwo candy is made from sugar, cornstarch, cardamom powder, nutmeg powder, and ghee. Peanuts are also added occasionally to enhance texture and flavour. [5] Gashaato, Kashaato or qumbe, made of coconut, sugar and oil, spiced with cardamom and is much loved sweet. Sugar is brought to a boil with a little water, then cardamom is added, followed by grated coconut.
