You know, for the first time in a really long time, there's finally some really good bipartisan legislation that's coming out of Congress. Recently, the bipartisan Federal Prison Oversight Act passed the Senate, which means now it just awaits a Biden signature.
The act would require the Department of Justice's Inspector General to inspect each federal prison to assign them a risk score, evaluate the issues they face, and fix whatever problems they have.
Now look, people commit heinous crimes, and they should be punished for them. That's why they go to prison, to serve their time, pay their debt to society, and hopefully get rehabilitated and reintegrated. However, the reality is that the federal prison system is rife with corruption, murder, rape, and assault. Watchdogs who study federal prisons have found that the federal prison system is extremely dangerous and extremely corrupt.
People who commit crimes and who go to federal prisons don't deserve a penalty that is greater than the one that they were sentenced to. That's why we have juries and that's why we have judges. A person who is convicted of a federal crime should not have to worry about whether or not theyโll come out of prison alive or in one piece, and they certainly should not have to worry about being sexually assaulted or somehow taken advantage of by prison staff.
If Biden makes the right move and signs this legislation, America may soon have a more fair and safe prison system that can stop recidivists and help anyone convicted of a crime to become an upstanding, law abiding citizen.
