Nicely written 👍
Very nice piece! The CGI and overall production budgets will also need to be massive!
While Warhammer 40k certainly needs and deserves to be adapted into live action, be it movie or serial, it comes with its own share of problem. The universe of Warhammer 40k certainly does not lack lore, and is full of interesting arcs, characters and concepts that will certainly suit a live action adaptation, but one of the biggest problems is that precisely due to its extreme vastness, an accurate adaptation of 40k is highly difficult.
Then comes the target audience, Warhammer universe might be massive but its fanbase is certainly nowhere large enough for most to even warrant spending enough money on a live action adaptation, which due to the universe’s vastness will require massive capital. Furthermore, Warhammer lacks any kind of traditional “likeable” character, given the bleakness of the universe it may prove very hard for a mainstream audience to connect with its “good guys” or even find any kind of “good race”, be they the human Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Sisters of Battle or the Inquisition serving the theocratic-fascist state of the Imperium of Mankind, the alien Eldar or the Tau Empire.
Given the rather complex nature of factions, while it is easy to pick out the bad guys but it is hard to find any good guys as the so-called good guys only serve themselves, making any kind of traditional hero story an incredibly hard prospect. Most of all however, the dark, bloody and non-traditional nature of Warhammer 40k is unlikely to appeal to a mass audience as it will feature tidal amounts of bleakness, darkness, morose and bloodshed.
There is nothing “happy” in the Warhammer 40k universe as its whole universe revolves around a basically never ending war, where death is the only truth of life. Now that Henry Cavill is trying to make a Warhammer 40k project, it’ll be interesting where things go given his own high passion for the universe, and while it is surely going to be faithful to the lore and spirit of the canon, it’ll still be a monumental task to adapt and feature a Warhammer 40k screenplay into a comprehensive live action adaptation.
For the Emperor!
