After much deliberation, India having with the new head coach as Gautam Gambhir has also decided on its other coaches.
Gambhir agreed to pick his support staff, but his suggestions were reportedly rejected, with BCCI now offering him a stop-gap solution for the tour of Sri Lanka.
Gambhir was supposed to finalise his support staff before July 22, but with the head coach now racing against time, he would likely head to Sri Lanka with NCA coaches. He had reportedly suggested five names for his support staff team, but BCCI rejected them all, barring Abhishek Nayar, who is likely to be approved as assistant coach.
Now after much deliberation, former India all-rounder Abhishek Nayar and former Netherlands cricketer Ryan ten Doeschate are reportedly set to join Gambhir as he gets ready to start his tenure as Team India coach with the Sri Lanka tour.
Both Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate will be added to the Team India coaching staff as assistant coaches for Gambhir, while T Dilip will be retained as fielding coach, Cricbuzz reported on Saturday.
Dilip’s tenure came to an end after the T20 World Cup 2024 which also saw Rahul Dravid (head coach), Vikram Rathour (batting coach), and Paras Mhambrey (bowling coach) depart from their respective roles. But Dilip has been retained as he is hugely popular among the players and played a big role in helping them build a strong bond.
There’s no clarity on who will be the bowling coach, replacing Mhambrey. The report stated that Morne Morkel who worked with Gambhir at Lucknow Super Giants in the same capacity is a strong candidate for the role.
Dilip and Nayar are expected to travel with the Indian cricket team on 22 July but there’s no timeline on when ten Doeschate will join the side as he is currently in the USA as a part of LA Knight Riders coaching staff in the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC)
