Nagaland got the approval to set up its first Medical College since its statehood in 1963, confirmed Health and Family Welfare Minister P Paiwang Konyak.
From the academic year 2023–2024, the medical college will start its journey with 100 MBBS students.
"We received the approval for a 100-seat (MBBS) medical college from the National Medical Commission (NMC), Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) on April 18," Konyak told the media. The State government will send the acceptance letter within a week to enable the MARB to issue the Letter of Permission for the academic year 2023-24, he further said.
According to the minister, it is "a great and historic day" for the residents of the northeastern state.
Health and Family Welfare Commissioner and Secretary Y Kikheto Sema announced that the session would begin in June or July 2023. The remaining 15 of the 100 seats would be set aside for applicants from other states, leaving 85 spaces for students from Nagaland.
As per media reports, the required infrastructures and other work will be completed by May 31.
