As the lone contender for the UEFA election, Aleksander Ceferin will be re-elected during the organization's conference in April. He will be elected for a third term as UEFA president. In 2019, the 55-year-old was re-elected unchallenged for a fourth term.
Although, during his second tenure, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez proposed the formation of a new league, the European Super League, with 12 teams participating, the decision was quickly reversed as numerous clubs backed out due to fan and governmental resistance.
Although Real Madrid and Barcelona are willing to launch the European Super League, the cooperation of many more clubs will be required to oust Ceferin in the presidential election.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta stated on Friday that "Super might be a possibility by 2025." The European Court of Justice concluded that UEFA's attempt to thwart the formation of the breakaway league violated European competition law.
Ceferin was elected UEFA's seventh president, succeeding Michel Platini, the former FIFA and French superstar who was barred from management in 2015 for ethics violations and forced to resign from UEFA after losing an appeal against the suspension.
