Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the stomach and intestines, also called the gastrointestinal tract. It causes uncomfortable abdominal symptoms such as diarrhea and constipation.
While you might be familiar with some of the common causes of this condition, like stress or certain foods, there are other factors that could be at play.
1 Gut Dysbiosis - The gut microbiome is linked to various health conditions, including IBS, which is directly related to gut dysbiosis, an imbalance in the gut bacteria. People with IBS tend to have decreased levels of "good bacteria" and increased levels of harmful strains, and treating IBS with prebiotics, probiotics, and a low-FODMAP diet can help correct gut dysbiosis.
2 SIBO - Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is a condition in which the small intestines harbour an abnormal number of bacteria, leading to interference with digestion and nutrient absorption.
3 Gut Permeability - The GI tract has a layer of tightly packed epithelial cells that prevent unwanted species from entering the bloodstream, but if the barriers between cells become permeable, it can cause undigested protein molecules and bacterial toxins to pass through, triggering immune reactions and inflammation.
4 Gut infection - Gut infections are linked to the development of IBS, and bacterial gastroenteritis and parasites such as B. hominis, Giardia spp., E. histolytica, Dientamoeba fragilis, and Trichinella spp. have been correlated with the progression of IBS. Modern lifestyle has compromised the gut's ability to resist infections from pathogenic bacteria and parasites due to high levels of stress, factors such as the Standard American Diet, and other issues that can lower immunity.
5 NCGS - Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS) is a condition that is gaining acceptance in the medical field and can be difficult to identify as its symptoms are similar to IBS. Common symptoms include gas, bloating, abdominal pain, changes in stool patterns, brain fog, and fatigue following gluten consumption.
