As the Israel-Palestine war continues and situation in Rafah worsens with multiple airstrikes, an image demanding “all eyes of Rafah’ has gone viral on social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook and X. What is Rafah?
The ‘All eyes on Rafah’ picture features tents in a refugee camp in Rafah, a city in the south of Gaza, where many Palestinians have been displaced after ongoing attacks by Israel. According to local officials, at least 45 civilians died after an Israeli strike on Sunday.
The ‘All eyes on Rafah’ image calls for awareness about the ongoing war. The slogan appears to have originated from a comment by Rick Peeperkorn, director of the World Health Organization's Office of the Occupied Palestinian Territories. In February, he said, “All eyes are on Rafah.” This was shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered an evacuation plan for the city. The plan was in preparation for attacks aimed at eliminating what Netanyahu claims are the last remaining strongholds of the militant group Hamas.
“‘All eyes on Rafah’ is a phrase that refers to the ongoing genocide in Rafah, Gaza, with over 1.4 million Palestinians seeking shelter,” Iran’s Embassy in India posted on X earlier this month.
‘All eyes on Rafah’ literally translates to “sabhi ki nazrein Rafah par hain.”
Rafah is a Palestinian city in the southern Gaza Strip bordering Egypt.
While ‘All eyes on Rafah’ image has gone viral on Instagram, videos from Rafah posted by Palestinian journalists have faced restrictions and in some instances, removal from social media due to their graphic portrayal of the aftermath of Israeli strikes.
The ‘All eyes on Rafah’ poster does not show any violence happening on ground, however, it sends the message to stop violence.
