Really thought provoking post. The “collective” American will seems to be very split along ideological lines - between policies and government in favor of “the self” vs. those in favor of caretaking for all.
The current challenges (global pandemic and global climate change) can’t be met or addressed by the disconcerted efforts of individuals, but only by collective and global community effort.
Shocking as well as thought provoking!
Civilizations used to be measured by how they cared for the sick, infirm and aged. America’s response to COVID-19 suggests, in part, that the selfishness born of economic decline - the fighting over an ever slimmer piece of the economic pie - has eroded any sense of responsibility for the public good.
And with it, America’s sense of compassion has started to crack, and through those cracks we start to see a kind of cruelty of indifference show through in some groups.
Perhaps America’s grand sense of responsibility in the post WWII era was just a mirage, inflated by unique economic circumstances.
