On Friday, a group of American lawmakers in a letter to FIFA asked this international body to recognize the exiled Afghan women's football team.
The team has been playing in Australia since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in August 2021.
In the last two years, the Taliban has severely restricted the freedom and rights of Afghan women. Among the severe restrictions imposed on girls' right to education, and according to the United Nations, it can be an example of a crime against humanity.
This group of legislators, which includes representatives of both the Republican and Democratic parties of the United States, asked FIFA to allow the Afghanistan Women's Team (AWT) to represent the women of their country who are under the rule of the Taliban. According to them, this action of FIFA will send an important message to girls and women all over the world.
At the end of July, the Afghan women's team wrote a letter asking FIFA to recognize them as the representatives of their country.
The letter comes as the Women's World Cup enters its final weeks.
