According to the weather agency, India's monsoon has produced 20% less rain than usual this season. Due to its heavy reliance on monsoon rainfall, the nation's vital agriculture sector is concerned about this shortfall.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, India has had 20% less rainfall than average since June 1. According to the report, there have been shortages in almost every region with the exception of a few southern states and heat waves in certain northwest states.
"The monsoon's progress is stalled. It has weakened. But when it revives and becomes active, it can erase the rain deficit in a short burst," an IMD official told Reuters.
Rainfall often begins in the south around June 1 and spreads over the country by July 8, facilitating the planting of crops such as sugarcane, rice, cotton, and soybeans. Crop production and economic growth in the third-largest economy in Asia may be impacted by the deficit.
According to recent data, the central region of India has received 29% less rainfall during the monsoon season, which is critical for the growth of soybean, cotton, sugarcane, and pulses.
On the other hand, an early monsoon commencement resulted in 17% greater rainfall in the southern region, which is important for paddy. The northwest saw a startling 68% shortfall in precipitation, while the northeast saw a 20% decrease.
Seventy percent of the rain required to water fields and replenish supplies comes from the monsoons, which are essential to India's almost $3.5 trillion economy.
India is the world's second-largest producer of rice, wheat, and sugar; without irrigation, nearly half of its cropland depends primarily on the yearly monsoon rains, which usually continue until September.
According to the official, there will likely be heat waves in the northern regions for a few more days, with weekend temperatures perhaps dropping. The northern parts of India are currently seeing maximum temperatures between 42 and 47.6 degrees Celsius, which is 4-9 degrees Celsius higher than average, according to IMD statistics.
