Amid talks of ceasefire, Lebanon's Hezbollah launched a massive barrage of rockets into northern Israel, to avenge the killing of a top commander.
This move escalated regional tensions as a ceasefire in Gaza hung in the balance. The attack came at a time when US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was in the region to push a ceasefire proposal with global support that has not been fully embraced by Israel or Hamas.
Since the war between Israel and Hamas began, Hezbollah has been trading fire with Israel nearly every day. Air raid sirens sounded across northern Israel, making it one of the largest attacks since the fighting started. Hezbollah said they fired missiles and rockets at two military bases in retaliation for the killing of Taleb Sami Abdullah.
Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes have killed over 400 people in Lebanon, mostly Hezbollah members, along with over 70 civilians. Israel has also suffered casualties, with 15 soldiers and 10 civilians killed.
Other Iran-aligned groups, including militias in Iraq and Syria and Yemen's Houthi rebels, have also targeted Israel, US and other targets since the start of the war, often drawing Western retaliation. The US administration said the best way to calm regional tensions is for Hamas to accept a proposal for a ceasefire that would end the war in Gaza.
