Amnesty International Condemns Taliban's Crackdown on Women's Amnesty International has strongly denounced the Taliban's recent crackdown on women's dress code, citing it as a blatant violation of freedom of movement and expression in Afghanistan. The organization called for an immediate cessation of the suppression of women and the release of those arbitrarily detained.
On Sunday, Amnesty International USA took to social media, revealing that the Taliban had arrested numerous women for non-compliance with the strict dress code, which mandates showing only their eyes. Reports of arbitrary detentions of women in Kabul and Daikundi provinces have triggered widespread reactions both within and outside Afghanistan.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) expressed concerns over the mistreatment and detention of women linked to their failure to adhere to the Taliban's mandated hijab. In response, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid dismissed the UNAMA report, labeling it as "propaganda."
It is noteworthy that the Taliban had previously endorsed the burqa, or a black loose dress with a mask, as the "best example" of hijab for Afghan women. The situation continues to raise international concerns about the rights and freedoms of women in the region.
