This was quite a memorable day, the above picture shows me with my fellow gymnast Madhusudan with Late Dalip Singh during the 1965 Bombay National Championship.
It was the first time in 52 years to all of our surprise and pride that Indian gymnastics have competed in the Olympics.
Under Dalip Singh, known as the father of gymnastics Tripura remained the disrupted king of gymnastics. Under his guidance, me and Bharat Kishore became the Arjun Awardee in 1975 and the first gold medal of the state at the National level. For those who are not aware, let me tell you that Arjuna Award recognizes athletes for outstanding performance in sports and games and the second highest and prestigious sporting award in India. That was my identity, it still is.
Coach Dalip Singh was different from the other previous coaches who were either too concerned with the infrastructure or the equipments. Dalip Singh was the kind of coach who would rather encourage children to join gymnastics if that required knocking from door to door and his efforts were well deservedly recognized by SAI and other organization bodies.
