Yes, it's healthy to have some amount of wax in the ear. While you may clean any visible excesses with the help of a soft cotton cloth, it's best to leave the remaining alone! Remember, your ear is a self-cleaning organ. If you insert an earbud, there may be chances of an injury which can have serious consequences, including loss of hearing. Besides, earwax is also useful. Here's why;
1 A natural moisturiser - Its high lipid content ensures your skin does not become too dry or itchy.
2 A natural cleanser - It traps dirt and dust before they reach inside your ear, and absorbs dead skin cells, hair & debris. When you chew or move your jaw, the old earwax moves out of the ear canal to the ear opening, from where it dries up and falls out.
3 Anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties - Earwax or cerumen is slightly acidic in nature and hence, discourages the growth of bacteria & fungus.
Of course if the earwax is causing unnecessary blockages leading to earache, infections or loss of hearing, it's best to consult an ENT specialist. There may also be surgical intervention required if holes have developed in your eardrum.
