There was an unspoken air of welcome. A physiotherapy session was in progress and a few elders were browsing through books in the library. We spent a while speaking to an elderly lady who was rushing for a bhajan session after the physiotherapy. She has been living at the home along with her husband for a year and says they are very happy. “They keep us engaged all the time”, she said. A pervasive observation was the helpful and friendly nature of the Estate Manager and some of the staff. They are ever ready to help whenever the seniors reach out to them for assistance. Primus has ensured that a concierge service is available to the residents to assist then in every need. The security and comfort that friendly hands offer is priceless.
Adarsh makes a compelling case for well-run senior citizen homes that meets the needs of the seniors. He speaks of three stages of senior citizen living and its flip side, senior citizen care. The first is the active living phase where the seniors are independent, active and seek companionship, the second is an assisted living phase where medical care and regular nursing care is needed and the third is the critical care facility where the seniors are no longer able to manage alone for day-to-day activities. Each of these phases has unique needs. Presently, there are no homes that cater for all these requirements in an integrated complex. However, Primus promises to connect a senior citizen to advanced medical care-assisted living and critical care facilities when needed. While the benefits of moving to a senior citizen home are apparent in the second and third stages, Adarsh believes that seniors must move into an active living environment at an early stage of their lives, when they are happy, healthy and active, when they can truly enjoy the ambience, the activities and companionship. God forbid, as time passes on and when the senior has serious health problems or loses a spouse, it will be extremely difficult to make the switch to a senior citizen home.
