Twitter woke up to the dangers of Trump only after he lost an election. This is nothing but opportunism.
The Twitter decision was a business of convenience and not of conviction. Many of his tweets leading up to the ban were worthy of sensor but it should be applied across the board and not selectively.
There has to be a principle and a principle that need to be upheld without discrimination. The latest decision of Twitter is highly problematic and is going to place a bad precedence.
How is it that Angela Merkel, who dislikes Trump as much as anybody, is able to see how problematic this is while many are celebrating it as a major victory? She isn’t the only foreign leader to express concern. The president of...wait for it...Mexico also condemned it.
Big tech’s recent moves will do nothing but deepen the existing divide. That is fairly easy to see. There will be a social media for the left and a separate one for the right. Many on the right are already switching to alternative platforms.
I think Elon Musk nailed it: “A lot of people are going to be super unhappy with west coast high tech as the de facto arbiter of free speech.”
Especially when Twitter turns around and says it’s worried about internet service providers blocking social media and messaging apps prior to the election in Uganda. They called it a violation of the principle of open internet. Can’t make this stuff up.
"West Coast high tech has to make the distinction between banning hate speech and banning speech it hates." - Elon Musk...again.
Oh well. I guess we should all just get onboard since Big Tech companies are such beacons of morality.
