While six consecutive earthquakes rocked western Afghanistan, reporters are finding it extremely challenging to gather information about the earthquake casualties. Some journalists say that the obstacles created by the Taliban in the way of free flow of information are hindering the process of aiding the earthquake-affected individuals.
The United States Geological Survey reported on Sunday, 15 of October, about the occurrence of six consecutive earthquakes in western Afghanistan. According to the information released by this organization, the first earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3, the second with a magnitude of 5.4, and the third with a magnitude of 4.1 shook western Afghanistan.
Furthermore, the fourth earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2, the fifth with a magnitude of 4.3, and the sixth with a magnitude of 4.4 caused tremors in western Afghanistan. As of now, the Taliban has not provided precise statistics to the media regarding the casualties of the consecutive earthquakes on Monday.
Initially, the Taliban's Ministry of Disaster Management is primarily responsible for providing accurate and timely statistics and information about the earthquakes. However, access to information about the casualties and damages caused by the earthquakes and the progress of relief efforts is severely hindered.
Videos shared in social media shows that some buildings in Herat, including the Jamia Pai Hisar Herat Mosque, were damaged due to the earthquake on Monday.
