Question : WHO has recommended anti coagulants for Covid and post Covid care . Why are they important ? If recommended how important is it to comply?
Dr Nishith Chandra’s answer
In addition to severe lung involvement, SARS COVID 2 VIRUS also causes, increased tendency of clot formation in the body, leading to heart attacks, strokes and pulmonary embolism. Venous Thrombosis embolism secondary to COVID-19 has resulted in higher mortality.
A vast majority of patients present with undiagnosed thromboembolism following COVID-19. To prevent it anticoagulation in moderate to severe and critical cases of COVID-19 is advisable. Enoxaparin is the preferred low-molecular weight heparin for anticoagulation in acute phase of venous thromboembolism. Postdischarge prophylaxis may be considered in patients with high risk of thromboembolic events after assessing the bleeding risk. Rivaroxaban and apixaban are preferred for post discharge prophylaxis.
Dr Chandra’s advice
The decision of anticoagulation should be left to the treating doctor. People should never take them on their own.
These should not be given to all COVID patients. They should only be given in moderate to severe risk of clotting, which can be assessed by the treating doctor.
