Did you get told your baby must breastfeed every 3-4hrs?
Breastfeeding a newborn is not just about weight gain and growth.... It's about bonding, getting used to the outside world and learning. This ridiculous notion of having a gap between feeds is actually crazy because it isn't how we work as humans.
Think if it this way. If you were hungry after breakfast, and you had a snack there in front of you, but someone placed this nonsense time limit on you, would you just not eat? Would you go hungry.... No. I don't imagine you would.
Breastfeeding is going well. Weight gain is good and baby is settled. But when baby shows hunger cues after only 40 minutes instead of the hoped for 2-3hrs they feel a sense something is fundamentally wrong with them, their milk supply or with baby. It can also lead hospital nurses/midwives to imply mums supply is "not enough" and to "supplement". Which for someone choosing a BF journey can be a real challenge. Cluster feeding, snacking, using the boob for comfort sucking is all NORMAL!
Think of BF like a bottomless brunch. You don't go stacking you plate a mile high the first pass. You know you have all afternoon, you graze, back and forth. And a quick reminder that babies can't tell the time. Stop expecting them to!
Don't let midwives/nurses set time constraints on a baby, they don't have watches....they don't even know they have hands. Relax, let your baby feed when they are hungry or thirsty. Learn to trust each other.
