When William Saliba limped off against Sporting with a suspected back injury in March, most expected a speedy return. An international break provided the perfect opportunity for the centre-back to rest and he would return in Arsenal's next game.
One month and three games later, Saliba has still not returned and Arsenal are missing him. Rob Holding has provided many uses in his time at Arsenal. He became known as Mikel Arteta's 'closer' last season. He would routinely come in the last 5-10 minutes of games, making the signal for a three-five-two and and settling in the middle of the three to head and clear everything that came near him.
It was towards the end of the season when Holding was called into the starting lineup due to injuries elsewhere that Arsenal suffered. The Englishman came into a crucial North London derby way too fired up and got sent off early in the game, leading to the Gunners' loss.
Due to Saliba's injury, Holding has again been asked to start. However, this season is different. Arsenal's defensive unit is coherent and settled. Gabriel, Alex Zinchenko and Ben White have retained their places for the majority of the season and Holding has been able to slide in easier. His performances against Crystal Palace and Leeds were solid, which is maybe what you would expect at home.
The trouble only creeped in as Arsenal travelled to Liverpool. Holding had good moments in the game but ultimately his flaws became apparent. He clumsily gave away a penalty which luckily was missed, and generally had a poor game with his passing often putting Arsenal back under pressure.
Whether Arsenal would have won with Saliba is up for debate, but Arteta's side clearly miss him. The Frenchman's pace and ability on the ball, as well as his calm and assured defending, make him a perfect defender for the way Arsenal play.
Saliba has not yet returned to training but is thought to be close. It is unlikely Arsenal will risk him against West Ham if he does return, but they will very much hope to have him for the crucial trip to Manchester.
