This year, Guwahati has been facing severe heatwave-like conditions that have caused temperatures to rise and put the lives of many in danger. This situation has raised questions about the government's preparedness towards tackling this issue and protecting the citizens from such natural disasters.
On April 17, the temperature of Guwahati soared to 37.7 degrees Celsius. Guwahati witnessed the largest departure (6.5 degrees Celsius) in temperature, way above normal on April 17. Apart from Guwahati, temperatures rose by 6 degrees in Dibrugarh, North Lakhimpur, and Agartala.
On April 19, due to the excessive heat, more than 50 children who were staying in a shelter camp in Doboka of Hojai District fell ill. Nausea, diarrhoea, dehydration, headaches and vomiting were prevalent symptoms among those who reported being ill. This situation raised questions about the government's preparedness towards the condition. The government needs to take the necessary steps to ensure that people are safe and secure during such extreme weather conditions.
A man in Tripura died of heatstroke on Wednesday, April 19. The deceased has been identified as Ranjit Dey local shopkeeper from Sabroom. Dey reportedly collapsed while he was walking to his store. When he arrived at the hospital, the doctors declared him dead. In the meantime, the heat wave has sent numerous more to the hospital throughout the state's various districts.
Last year on August 8, Sigdhasikha Das, a student of Nicholas Higher Secondary School reportedly fainted due to extreme heat during the morning assembly but later passed away.
Due to the prevailing heat conditions, several states in Northeastern states like Tripura, Mizoram, and Meghalaya have announced the closure of schools. However, Assam has not taken any such decision yet.
Speaking to G Plus, Dipika Das, the Deputy Director of Secondary Education stated, “As of now, there’s no proper discussion. If the temperature remains the same, we will take the necessary steps.”
Although the schools in Guwahati are closed due to the holiday till Sunday, they will reopen on Monday.
