Garcinia pedunculata, a medicinal plant commonly called 'Borthekera' in Assamese and traditionally forbidden for raw consumption, has been found to protect against heart diseases.
When the dried pulp of the ripe fruit of the medicinal plant was given, it decreased signs of cardiac hypertrophy, oxidative stress, and inflammation in the heart caused by ISO.
The sun-dried slices of the ripe fruit are used for culinary and medicinal purposes and are known to have therapeutic properties like anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic, antibacterial, antifungal, antidiabetic, hypolipidemic, nephroprotective, and even neuroprotective activity. Multiple scientific studies have found that G. pedunculata is a good source of antioxidants, which backs up what people say. However, the cardioprotective potential has yet to be explored.
Scientists at the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), an independent branch of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), looked into how this medicinal plant might help prevent heart diseases.
For 28 days, Wistar rats were given a double dose of the herb's bioactive chloroform fraction (GC) at 24-hour intervals (85 mg/kg BW).
