At a literary event in upstate New York on Friday, Salman Rushdie, the author of Satanic Verses, was stabbed in the neck. His book has received numerous death threats and an Iranian Fatwa.
Soon after his introduction, Rushdie was about to give a speech at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, New York, some 75 miles south of Buffalo, when the man proceeded to stab him in the neck. According to a statement from the New York State Police, Rushdie was airlifted to a local hospital. After the assault, Rushdie fell through a stage curtain, and according to witnesses who spoke to the Washington Post, the author's hand had blood on it. The attacker was successfully tackled by the cops. Rushdie's condition was unknown at the time, but police had apprehended a single man attacker.
