Ahh, bail reform. One of the worst policies that far left democrats have pushed - successfully - for years. It seems like every week the consequences of it show its ugly face, and New York City is certainly no exception.
Recently in New York City, a migrant from Venezuela was arrested for stealing nearly $1,400 worth of merchandise from stores, along with an accomplice. But of course, I wouldn't have mentioned bail reform if that were the full story. No, the full story is that he was accused of leading an assault on two New York City police officers earlier this year, and he was released because of bail reform.
It really is something, isn't it? Now look, in some ways I get it. New York City has faced a lot of issues with pre-trial detention. Rikers Island, for example, is infamous for housing thousands of inmates, many who wait a year or more in detention for trials for crimes that wouldn't even land them in prison for that long if convicted. But is allowing every person who commits crimes like assault on a police officer free really the solution?
It is obvious to me that bail reform is a result of fringe left-wing advocates and elected officials seizing on the suffering of people and a bad news cycle and pushing for extreme radical left-wing legislation. Because we all know that it's much easier to put in place a policy that lets people out of pretrial detention than it is to actually fix a broken system.
But Democrats will face the music eventually - bail reform has already been extremely unpopular.
