At the World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade, Olympic bronze medalist Bajrang Punia defeated Puerto Rican wrestler Sebastian Rivera 11-9 after falling behind 0-6 in the match.

At the world championships, Bajrang won a medal for the fourth time. Vinesh Phogat had earlier won bronze in the women's 53 kg competition, giving India a total of two medals in the sport.
