Being a bachelor again' after twenty years-Not technically but will still call it so. Moving places, living more than 450 kms apart. This is exactly what happened, when I got transferred.
I am a tea planter and she a classical dance/home science teacher in a boarding school. We met in 2000 and liked each other, then families met and we got married. Have two children and stayed together till 2020 March when I got transferred to one corner of Assam and she had to stay back for her job. Covid happened and schools wanted the teachers totake online classes from campus.
I came to a new place, all packed with two children, not having a clue what is packed where and what goes where.
So hundreds of video calls and numerous late nights later, we managed to unpack and decorate the house-she would tell me what goes in the drawing room, what goes in the bedroom/guest room, dining room. Working during day and doing the house at night.
She would manage househelps, give instructions, what is cooking, making shopping list, what to plant in kitchen garden-even checking the deep freezer. Even today if some guests are coming, the cook gets instructions on video calls.
After 20 years of having someone to take care of things, suddenly feeling like a bachelor you have no clue what is going on in your life.
On one hand it was exciting but yes tedious also. However, technology makes it easier.
I have again got transferred , so the packing is again happening over the video calls.
While nothing can replace human contact, it's most important but technology can come handy, whether it's your siblings staying in other places or your family. Now you can be party to everything, from a cake cutting on a birthday to any occasion just having a regular banter. Technology does come as an aid. Covid times have taught us that. If the technology wasn't there, we wouldn't even know what is happening to our love ones. The world would have just collapsed.
