Belgium will head into Thursday with all to do. Once again, they did not produce enough, and this time, they were punished. Morocco got two second half goals to defeat the number two ranked team in the world 2-0.
Coach Roberto Martinez sacrificed Youri Tielemans, Leander Dendoncker and Yannick Carrasco, with Amadou Onana, Thomas Meunier and Thorgan Hazard taking their places. That saw Belgium revert to a back four for the clash.
Belgium had most of the ball in the opening 20 minutes but failed to really create anything serious. Morocco got into the game more after that, and had put the ball in the back of the net courtesy of a Hakim Ziyech free kick. Unfortunately for them, Romain Saïss was adjudged to have been offside and interfering with the play, despite the Besiktas center back not making contact with the ball.
Morocco would try the same trick again in the 73rd minute as Abdelhamid Sabiri whipped in a dangerous ball. Saïss stayed onside this time, blindsiding Courtois as the ball went in to give the CAF side the lead.
Martinez made a flurry of substitutions after Morocco took the lead. Romelu Lukaku was amon the five players brought on in hopes of salvaging something from the game. They still failed to properly test Munir, who was a late call-up to the Moroccan starting 11 after Bono suffered an injury before the match.
Zakaria Abdoukhlal iced the game in stoppage time as Ziyech found him just outside of the six yard box. The striker took the shot with aplomb, beating Courtois high.
Morocco now leads the group on four points, with Belgium needing to get a result against Croatia on Thursday to secure their place in the knockout round.
