In a match where Belgium was always expected to win, they managed to do exactly that. However, it was far from convincing from the world’s number two ranked side. A Michy Batshuayi strike just before halftime was all they mustered, but in the end, it was enough to defeat Canada 1-0 in Al Rayyan.
It was the CONCACAF nation that carried proceedings for most of the 90 minutes. Just 10 minutes in, Canada had a penalty after Yannick Carrasco blocked a shot with his hand. Alphonso Davies stepped up, but was denied by Thibaut Courtois.
The domination continued for the Canadians, but they were very wasteful. Out of the 21 attempts in the 90 minutes, just three were on target. Belgium had the same number of shots on target albeit having 12 less efforts.
Belgium would get their goal in the penultimate minute of normal time in the opening period. Toby Alderweireld found Batshuayi with a long ball, with the striker able to direct it past Milan Borjan.
Canada continued to press in the second half and create chances, but they could not put one away. Substitute Cyle Larin got his head on several crosses but could not nod one home.
Roberto Martinez’s Belgium faces Morocco on Sunday knowing that a win will put then through. Canada battles the 2018 finalists Croatia on the same day, needing to avoid defeat in order to stand a chance at profession.
