Belgium aims to progress from Group F in the FIFA World Cup on Sunday as they battle Morocco. Despite a sub-par performance on Wednesday, the Red Devils earned a 1-0 victory over Canada. Here is a look at their starting 11 and what will be important for Roberto Martinez’s side to do on Sunday.
Possible lineup
3-4-2-1: Courtois – Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Dendoncker – Carrasco, Witsel, Tielemans, Castagne – De Bruyne, Hazard – Batshuayi
There is a possibility that Martinez will opt for an unchanged 11 to Wednesday. Should he make some alterations, those will likely come in the midfield.
Amadou Onana had a solid second half in the first match, which could see him replace Youri Tielemans or Axel Witsel in the starting lineup. Thomas Meunier could also come in for either of the wide midfielders, which would see the Borussia Dortmund man start at right wing back.
Eden Hazard still is not at the level he was at and that could see his place be given to someone else. Should the scenario occur, expect the in-form Leandro Trossard to get the nod. The Brighton man looked lively in his cameo on Wednesday, which could be what Martinez need.
Finally, Leander Dendoncker could end up on the bench in favour of 18-year-old Zeno Debast. The Anderlecht youngster has burst onto the scene, regularly featuring in the team of late.
Keys to the match
Belgium failed to start off well in Al Rayyan, something they can seldom afford to repeat on Sunday. With the stadium likely to have a majority of Moroccan support, this could further work against them if they come out sluggish.
The other important thing for them to do is break forward in numbers and take the game to Morocco. Belgium struggled to properly get attacking numbers in the opposition half against Canada. That was largely due to the pressure they were constantly under. especially in the first half. Carrasco could not get to push as forward as he would like in the first match, rendering him ineffective. With the incredible crop of attacking talent they have; the Belgians should not see any trouble in getting forward more.
