Wakefield Trinity Head Coach Mark Applegarth can’t “fault the lads in terms of the desire to work hard” in his side’s 22-6 loss away to Wigan Warriors.
Wakefield are without a win this campaign and are favourites to go down to the Championship next season but Applegarth is happy with the effort that his team is making even in defeat.
When asked about the game, Applegarth said “Thought we coughed up too many yards in that first half, it felt like we were constantly defending our try line. Against a team of Wigan’s quality, you can’t afford to be doing that and I thought that was the difference in the first half.”
“I just said in there I can’t fault the lads in terms of the desire to work hard for each other but them individual errors are currently hurting us bad.”
Applegarth was also asked about Will Dagger, who was set to start at full-back in the round 10 clash until he pulled out in the warm-up. Applegarth said “It’s a layover from last week, he hurt his back against Leigh, and we had to bring him off. He managed to train on Thursday and Friday, so he put his hand up and said he was good. In the warmup, he went into a collision and started feeling some shooting pains down his side, so we had to pull him out.”
Also, when asked about Debutant Rowan Milnes, he said “He showed him and Mason (Lino) can be a good combo, it wasn’t really the day to see that because we didn’t have that much good ball, especially in that first half. I thank Hull KR for letting us have him. Depending on how they are looking, we can keep that on week by week, that will be down to Hull KR and Willie (Peters). He’s a quality player with a great kicking game and when we do get our fair share of field position, I think he’ll add some much-needed quality there for sure.
Wakefield will look to improve when they visit Warrington after the international break.
