Bevan French and Jai Field star for Wigan Warriors in a scrappy 20-16 home win against Salford Red Devils. Two tries for French and one for Toby King edged out the Red Devils to stay above them in the league table.
The game's first points came in the way of the home side as back-to-back penalties saw Harry Smith take the two in the first five minutes to put Wigan ahead early on. 2-0.
But the first try-scoring chance in the contest came 10 minutes later as Marc Sneyd put a great kick over that former Wigan winger, Joe Burgess just overran the ball and forced the Warriors into defending for the first time.
That then resulted in Ken Sio scoring the first try of the game and this time it was Ryan Brierley, putting a great kick in and the opposite winger finished the job to put the Red Devils ahead. Sneyd added the extras. 2-6.
Wigan hit back 12 minutes from the break as French beat four Salford defenders to stroll under the sticks for Wigan’s first evening try. Smith added the extras. 8-6.
Salford added a penalty of their own five minutes before the break, but Burgess could have been over if it wasn’t for Field, who caught him. Sneyd scored the penalty to make it 8-8 at the end of the first half.
Withstanding pressure paid off for the Red Devils as they took the lead seven minutes into the second half. A brilliant cut-out ball from Brodie Croft caught Wigan napping and Sio went over for his second of the contest. Sneyd added the extras. 8-14.
Salford extended their lead as they won a penalty due to a late hit on Chris Atkin. Sneyd added the two. 8-16.
As the game went on, Wigan seemed to have more and more chances and the Warriors finally broke Salford’s line as French dove over to reduce the deficit. Smith added the extras. 14-16.
Wigan won the game seven minutes from time with a great team try and a brilliant cut-out ball from Field to put King over. Smith added the extras. 20-16.
