Wigan Warriors picked up another two points on their road to the top two as they beat a below-average Huddersfield Giants side 22-6. Tries from Abbas Miski, Jai Field and Liam Marshall saw the home side cruise to a simple victory.
Huddersfield started the game the strongest, but the Warriors struck first with Miski, who collected a great cut-out ball from Bevan French to open the scoring in the eighth minute. Harry Smith failed to add the extras. 4-0.
Wigan were close to scoring their second but was thwarted by great goal-line defence from Jermaine McGillvary.
It looked like the Warriors were going to score later in the first half but another brilliant defensive move from the Giants kept them in the game, this time by Harvey Livett, who ran out the line to intercept a dangerous ball.
Four minutes before the half ended, Miski was in for his second as he collected a simple pass from his centre. That was the last scoring of the half as Smith added the extras. 10-0.
Wigan carried on their scoring after the break as Field stepped past several Giants players to go under the sticks. Smith added the extras.16-0.
Penalty after penalty for Wigan but with 20 minutes left, Ethan Havard was sent to the sin bin for a shoulder charge, but Huddersfield couldn’t convert the chance and Wigan carried on with possession.
Even with the disadvantage, Wigan managed to find gaps in the Giants’ defence. Smith passed to Field, who put a tremendous low kick for Liam Marshall to score. Smith added the extras. 22-0.
Huddersfield thought they were under the sticks with Kevin Naiqama, but referee Jack Smith called the pass before to be forward.
Former Wigan back Jake Bibby scored late on for the Giants, scoring their first try since the 10th of June against the Warrington Wolves. Jake Connor added the extras. 22-6.
